CHIARO SCURO.
Café/Restaurant + Bar
Ground Level
Chiaroscuro is a technique employed in the visual arts to represent light and shadow which best represents the airy bright café contrasted against the dark and moody bar.  This theme of reflection is also seen here in my form as I replicated the original structure to create the space for the bar on the other side of the café.Â

With large clear windows allowing for natural light to illuminate the café reflecting off the terrazzo wall. The glass floor allows users to see the raw site beneath this materiality adds to the bright mood compared to the bar.Â

As you walk into the space you are greeted by floor to ceiling black windows and lit up wall that displays the alcohol.Â
The windows are blacked out to remove the connection to the outside world as the public are drawn into the space through the small opening in the doorway. The material palette is instead a black marble veneer combined with different stone finishes to create a very dramatic space. The feelings evoked within these 2 spaces are completely opposite.Â

Here  you can see where the original site wall has been covered with the terrazzo and seating placed along side it.Â

PROCESS WORK

My original form strategy remained the same however the materiality on the interior and exterior of the bar side changed to fit my idea of contrast.
As the two spaces seemed to blend into one I wanted the reflected spaces to create more drama so I switched the bar to a dark and moody materiality.Â
Blacking out the windows and adding custom wall lighting.
